Be Smarter Than the Robot Calling You

Robocallers have a virtual arsenal of the latest technology and persuasion techniques at their disposal. Their objective is always the same - influence you into doing or saying something that serves their interest, but not necessarily yours.
It is important to know 99% of the 250 million robocalls, telemarketing and tele-criminal calls made to Americans each day are initiated by computerized (robot) dialing systems.
Within milliseconds, these computers calculate what to do if and when you or your voicemail answers your phone. In some cases, the call is immediately transferred to a live operator. Here, you may notice a delay from the time you answer and when a live person actually gets on the line. This delay is caused by the computer determining if you are a live person or if it’s your voicemail.
Other times, the call may be completely robotic. This is commonly known as a robocall and usually is a simple pre-recorded message designed to have you take some action. The artificial intelligence of these robocall computers has developed to a point where many of us don’t realize we are actually talking to a computer.
Even worse, some robocalls are implementing a hybrid robocall. This is where a well-trained human sits at a computer, listens to multiple robocalls being made at the same time and instructs the computer on how to respond in each case with pre-recorded snippets of conversations, convincing even more of us that we are talking with a human caller rather than a robot.
Lastly, some robocallers are content just getting your voicemail. They now know your number is live and can sell your number to other tele-criminals or leave you a spam message.
The main reason for all of these unwanted calls is they are efficient and effective for the caller. Billions of dollars are stolen by telecriminals each year. These Robocallers can make 10,000 calls for as little $20.00, so they are playing a numbers game for success at our expense.
Take back control of your phone by following these tips. Don’t answer calls from numbers you don’t recognize, hang up if you accidentally answer a robocall, and don’t call back unknown numbers left on your voicemail.
You can also put your number on the Federal Do Not Call List which blocks a limited number of unwanted calls and / or sign up for and test apps, services and equipment that block robocalls and protect your privacy.  Some of these third-party solutions are becoming more effective.
